Anima Libera

Anima Libera e. V. is a sanctuary farm in Hagen im Bremischen, Germany, where association chair Elke Gillich lives alongside 36 rescued and cared-for animals on a former farm.

The animals include pigs, chickens, donkeys, horses, dogs and a cat, each regarded as a “free soul” deserving dignity, respect and compassion. The organization’s work combines hands-on animal care with advocacy for a more ethical understanding of animals, particularly farm animals. Its aims include protecting animals’ physical and psychological wellbeing, supporting their freedom to express natural behaviours, and sharing knowledge about species-appropriate environments, enrichment, learning and positive reinforcement.

Anima Libera also sees compassionate relationships with animals as a way to encourage empathy and peaceful interactions among people. Supporters can contribute through one-time or monthly donations, sponsorships for individual animals, food and other in-kind gifts, or practical help on the farm. The association also welcomes active members and volunteers who can assist with animal care, maintenance, fundraising, public outreach, photography and social media
