Animal Diversity Web (ADW) is an educational resource focused on animals and their biological diversity. Associated with the University of Michigan, the U-M Museum of Zoology, and the university’s Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department, the site provides species accounts and tools for exploring animal information. Its content is written largely by and for college students, with accounts covering a range of organisms and topics.
Visitors can browse animal groups, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, fishes, and invertebrates, or search by keyword. ADW also offers pictures, specimen information, sounds, maps, classification details, and subject-based resources. Additional features include information about animal names, educational resources, special collections, and a glossary.
The site notes that it does not cover every species or necessarily include the latest scientific information; its accounts are edited for accuracy, but completeness and accuracy are not guaranteed. Animal Diversity Web serves as a reference and learning resource for people interested in animal life, while providing access to curated information and supporting materials
