APEO, the Portuguese Association of Obstetric Nurses, is a nonprofit professional association founded on 30 July 1997. It represents and supports obstetric nurses and midwives, promoting their role in women’s health and maternity care. The association’s work highlights the contribution these professionals make throughout women’s lives, from adolescence and pregnancy to menopause, and advocates for their autonomy, integration and recognition within health services.

APEO offers professional learning and networking through conferences, courses, workshops, educational meetings and event listings. It also shares resources and professional information, including the Portuguese Journal of Midwives, informational leaflets, recommendations, opinions and documents relating to home birth. Its activities include national and international working groups, an ethics committee, a blog, and scholarships and awards.

The association encourages membership and public engagement through campaigns, petitions and community events that bring together women, families, students, health professionals and local stakeholders. APEO is also hosting the International Confederation of Midwives’ triennial congress in Lisbon in June 2026, connecting Portuguese midwives with colleagues from around the world.
