About APHA
The Portuguese Association of Art Historians (APHA) is a nonprofit professional and scholarly association founded in 1989 to strengthen scientific training in art history and promote public awareness of Portugal’s cultural and artistic heritage. Established by university teachers from different parts of the country, it brings together around 700 members, including students, early-career researchers, established academics and professionals working across cultural fields. APHA supports the study and visibility of art history through research resources, electronic materials and regular information about opportunities and initiatives in Portugal and abroad.
Its website features a database of projects and research in Portuguese art history, alongside information on theses, dissertations, publications and related resources. The association also organizes activities and public discussion, shares news and calls, and works to build relationships with similar organizations in Portugal and internationally. In partnership with the Millennium bcp Foundation, APHA presents the José-Augusto França awards, which recognize outstanding academic work in art history
