Canterbury’s Aphra Behn is a cultural and educational project dedicated to celebrating the life and works of Aphra Behn (1640–1689), a writer born in Harbledown near Canterbury. It aims to restore her public recognition and acknowledge her as a daughter of Canterbury. Behn is presented as the first professional woman writer in English, known in her lifetime for more than 20 successful plays staged in London, as well as poetry, translations from French, and pioneering fiction. Her novel Oroonoko tells of an uprising of enslaved people, while other works explore women’s desire, sexuality, and pursuit of freedom.
The project shares Behn’s legacy through a programme of talks, public readings, performances, exhibitions, outings, and other events, alongside resources about her works and life. Activities have included lectures, a production of The Amorous Prince, and a visit to her grave at Westminster Abbey. The website also offers useful links, event information, and a newsletter. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the project is based at Canterbury Christ Church University.
