About Apostrophe Protection Society
The Apostrophe Protection Society (APS) is an organization dedicated to preserving the correct use of the apostrophe and promoting clarity in written English. Founded in 2001, it highlights punctuation errors and explains how apostrophes communicate possession and form contractions. After a short closure at the end of 2019, the Society was revived in 2022 under chairman Bob McCalden. It now has more than 5,000 members worldwide, and membership is free and open to anyone who values clear, correct English.
The APS website offers practical guides on apostrophe use, including contractions, possession, “its” versus “it’s,” plurals, and less common forms. Its Rogues’ Gallery and Apostrophe Watch feature real-world examples, many submitted by members and supporters. Visitors can also explore news, newsletters, blogs, media coverage, and useful links, or send in examples of misplaced, missing, or unnecessary apostrophes. The Society’s online store sells APS T-shirts, mugs, books, greeting cards, and other selected apostrophe and grammar products. Through education, community participation, and merchandise, the APS encourages more accurate written communication.
