Appcanary was dedicated to enhancing software security by preventing the use of vulnerable software on servers. Co-founders Max Veytsman and Phill Mendonça-Vieira initially aimed to improve global security by creating solutions that ultimately contributed to the now-defunct Gemcanary and the establishment of Appcanary. Their primary offerings included an API, an agent, and monitor alerting tools before announcing their transition to GitHub in early 2018.
This shift allowed them to contribute to GitHub's expanding security features, including the recently introduced vulnerable dependency alerts. Customers were informed that the Appcanary services would officially cease operations on June 1st, 2018, with no new signups accepted. The commitment to supporting clients during this transition was emphasized, and they encouraged users to utilize GitHub's security features moving forward.
Though Appcanary's products were set to sunset, the brand's mission to secure software continues through their new role at GitHub, aiming to protect developers around the world from vulnerabilities
