Australian Plants Society – Keilor Plains Group is a district group of the Australian Plants Society Victoria, serving the Keilor Plains area of Melbourne’s western plains. Formed in 1972, the group aims to study, promote, protect and propagate Australian indigenous flora, with particular attention to local plants whose habitats have been degraded, altered or lost and whose species may be threatened or vulnerable. Members also grow Australian plants from other regions.
The group welcomes visitors to its monthly meetings at Airport West Uniting Church. Meetings feature guest speakers on subjects including native grasses, local grasslands, alpine flora and garden plants, alongside an annual plant auction and plant table. Members can also join day trips, weekend excursions and practical gardening sessions to explore native habitats and learn about Australian plants.
The group shares information through its library, newsletters, seed bank, online resources and social media. Its publications include Plants of Melbourne’s Western Plains: A Gardener’s Guide to the Original Flora and Lantern Bushes of Australia: Thomasias & Allied Genera, a field and horticultural guide. It also provides links to nurseries, places to visit and further reading.
