It offers the permaweb, which is a permanent, decentralized internet where everything published is available forever. The permaweb provides low-cost, zero maintenance, and permanent hosting for web apps, files, and web pages. It is built on top of Arweave's protocol, which acts as a global permanent hard drive.

Ar. io gateways are the front doors to the permaweb, serving as infrastructure utilities that allow users to access and query information stored on Arweave. These gateways perform functions like data retrieval, caching, serving, and indexing transactions into a queryable database.

They are not performed by the Arweave mining nodes. Arweave Name System (ArNS) simplifies permaweb navigation by offering a censorship-resistant naming system stored on Arweave. It functions as a permissionless address book and ensures fast and efficient access through AR.

The ar. io gateway node software is open source, inviting everyone to contribute to the growth and preservation of a more secure and permanent internet
