About Architektenlexikon
The "Architektenlexikon Wien 1770 - 1945" is a pioneering online architecture encyclopedia that highlights the influence of architects, builders, city planners, and theorists whose work significantly shaped the cityscape of Vienna. This comprehensive resource encompasses biographical data, architectural aesthetics, theories, histories, and critical analyses, offering readers profound insights beyond conventional lexicons.
The project acknowledges prominent figures such as Theophil Hansen, Otto Wagner, and Adolf Loos, while also shedding light on previously underrepresented architects. It includes biographical entries for around 1,050 architects who were active between 1770 and 1945, making it an essential tool for researchers, students, and anyone interested in Vienna’s architectural heritage.
Since its launch, the Architektenlexikon has filled gaps in architectural research, facilitating inquiries from both national and international academic institutions. Supported by the FWF - Foundation for Scientific Research, this project is continuously updated, aiding in the preservation and understanding of Vienna's architectural history—available through their e-shop and various educational and cultural events.
