Arte Público Press is a renowned and pioneering brand that has been at the forefront of promoting contemporary and recovered literature by US Hispanic authors. Established during the Hispanic Civil Rights Movement, Arte Público Press and its imprint, Piñata Books, serve as a vibrant platform for Hispanic literary creativity, as well as arts and culture. Recognizing the lack of representation for Hispanic writers in mainstream publishing, Arte Público Press was founded in 1979 by Nicolás Kanellos.
Their notable authors include Sandra Cisneros, Luis Valdez, Miguel Piñero, and Helena María Viramontes. In addition, the Press launched the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage Program in 1992, aimed at recovering and publishing lost Latino writings from the American colonial period through 1960. Piñata Books, an imprint dedicated to children's and young adult literature, emerged in response to the demand for accurate portrayals of US Hispanic culture.
With its bilingual books and engaging novels, Piñata Books aims to fill the void in the literary market, showcasing diverse cultures. Despite being smaller than New York publishing giants, Arte Público Press's success in the commercial book market comes from its cultural sensitivity, visionary approach, and commitment to Hispanic literature in the United States
