Artesanato do Maranhão is a project and online platform dedicated to documenting and showcasing the state’s rich craft traditions and the people who sustain them. Through Mapearte, the project has visited more than 2,000 villages and mapped 4,736 Maranhão artisans, connecting their profiles with the towns and communities where they work. Visitors can explore artisans, places, products, and featured craft traditions, or search the collection by city, craft type, village, artisan, or product.

The platform catalogs more than 23,000 handmade products across 59 categories and introduces regional materials, techniques, product names, and measurement terms. Its featured subjects include crafts made from babaçu palm, decorative work associated with Bumba Meu Boi, brooms, hammocks, miniature boats, and ox carts. These examples reflect the diversity of local resources and everyday life across Maranhão. The site also invites artisans to update or create their pages and encourages users to help improve records and images, supporting broader recognition of the state’s makers and their work.
