The Arthur Beetson Foundation was established to carry forward the legacy of Arthur Beetson, a celebrated rugby league forward and the first Indigenous Australian to captain a national sporting team. Proud of his Aboriginal heritage, Beetson was remembered for his leadership, warmth and generosity. The Foundation works to help close gaps in outcomes for Indigenous Australians by engaging communities and supporting opportunities in health, education, sport, employment and business development.
A central initiative is the Arthur Beetson Medal, which recognises Indigenous Australians making an outstanding contribution to Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through rugby league. Recipients are valued for their care for their communities, respect for culture, talent and humility. The medal is presented when an appropriate recipient and occasion arise; the inaugural medallist was Johnathan Thurston.
The Foundation also supports the Queensland Murri Carnival, a rugby league event with menβs, womenβs and junior competitions. Beyond sport, the Carnival promotes health, vocational and educational outcomes, with participation requirements including health checks and school attendance for junior players.
