The Adaptive Sailing Association of BC (ASABC) is a registered Canadian charity that has spent more than 30 years making sailing accessible to people with physical and intellectual disabilities. Based in Vancouver, the organization offers inclusive recreational and competitive sailing opportunities for people aged eight and older, welcoming sailors of all skill levels. Children sail for free.
ASABC’s programs give participants the chance to experience greater independence, confidence and the freedom of being on the water. Its fleet includes the Martin 16, a sailboat designed by Richmond, BC, yacht designer and manufacturer Don Martin with the needs of quadriplegic sailors in mind. The association also uses adaptive technologies, including Sip ’n’ Puff controls and adaptive steering, to support sailors with different abilities.
Beyond sailing programs, ASABC offers membership, race club activities and events, including the Mobility Cup. Community members can volunteer in a range of roles or support the charity through donations and fundraising initiatives. Together with its volunteers and supporters, ASABC works to enrich lives through accessible sailing.
