About Asas do Mar
Asas do Mar, the Azores Institute of Marine Ornithology (IOMA), is a nonprofit association established in 2020 to study and conserve the Azores’ seabird community and its habitats. The organization promotes good practices in seabird conservation and encourages people to value, care for, and protect nature. Its work combines conservation projects, education, and opportunities for public participation.
IOMA shares information about seabirds, including resident, breeding, migratory, wintering, and occasional species, as well as their habitats and the threats they face. Its activities include the “Kindness can Kill” campaign, initiatives focused on yellow-legged gulls, Ecology Day events, children’s photography workshops, and documentary screenings. Asas do Mar also presents a seabird photography exhibition and competition, with editions listed from 2021 to 2025, and invites people to volunteer or become members.
Through its projects and educational activities, the institute aims to build understanding of seabirds and inspire support for their conservation across the Azores.
