About ASMFC

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC), based in Arlington, VA, is a leading organization focused on the conservation and management of Atlantic coastal fisheries. With over 80 years of experience, the Commission serves as a deliberative body for coordinating the efforts of 27 nearshore fish species conservation among the coastal states. The Commission consists of representatives from each state, including marine fisheries management agency directors, state legislators, and stakeholder representatives.

Together, they engage in important policy-making discussions on interstate fisheries management, fisheries science, habitat conservation, and law enforcement. ASMFC's mission is to promote the better utilization of the fisheries along the Atlantic seaboard through cooperative efforts to protect and promote sustainable fishing practices. By implementing joint programs, the Commission aims to prevent physical waste of marine resources and ensure their long-term viability.

The Commission's success lies in its collaboration with federal partners such as NOAA Fisheries and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

This state/federal partnership has led to significant achievements in rebuilding coastal fisheries, including the recovery of stocks like Atlantic striped bass, black sea bass, bluefish, scup, summer flounder, Spanish mackerel, and spiny dogfish. Recognizing the value of healthy coastal fishery resources, ASMFC is committed to sustaining these resources for the benefit of both fishing and non-fishing communities. In 2016 alone, marine commercial and recreational fisheries created 1.

7 million jobs and generated billions of dollars in sales, income, and value-added impacts. To fund its initiatives, the Commission relies on member state dues and state and federal grants. This funding allows ASMFC to carry out its mandates and implement effective fisheries management and monitoring programs.

As an organization, ASMFC values inclusivity, transparency, and efficiency. Using a one state/one vote system, decisions are made collectively to ensure fairness and the best interests of all involved. The Commission remains dedicated to the accountable assessment of stock health, identification of threats, and the implementation of successful rebuilding programs.

Although the Commission faces various challenges, including fiscal uncertainty and habitat threats, its committed Commissioners, along with federal support, strive to leave behind healthy and abundant marine fisheries for future generations to enjoy. By reinforcing investments in marine fisheries management and science, ASMFC believes great economic and social benefits can be realized nationwide.
