A. F. A.
L. (Asociación Extremeña de Ayuda a Familias Afectadas de Leucemias) is a regional nonprofit association founded in January 1995 to support families affected by leukemia and other serious blood-related conditions, including lymphoma, myeloma and aplasia. Based in Mérida, Extremadura, the organisation works to ease the practical and emotional burdens faced by patients and their families.
Its principal service is Programa Compañía, a lodging programme for patients referred by the Extremadura Health Service to hospitals outside the region. AFAL provides shared, furnished accommodation near hospitals in Madrid, Barcelona, Salamanca and Toledo; the programme is funded by the regional health service. The association also shares information about its work, offers ways to become a member or make a donation, and helps people register interest in donating bone marrow, organs or blood.
Members can participate in the association’s activities and contribute voluntarily to its aims. AFAL invites individuals and organisations to collaborate, and receives support from the Government of Extremadura and its health and social policy department
