ASOTEP, also known as the Association of Private Port Terminals of Ecuador, was established in 1993 as a non-profit organization with legal personality in the private sector. The main purpose of ASOTEP was to bring together different companies that had the vision of constructing, operating, and managing new private port terminals to meet the growing cargo volume in Ecuador's international maritime traffic. The services offered by ASOTEP include representing the private port sector in front of official and private entities, publishing and disseminating specialized publications on maritime-port issues, promoting national and international events related to maritime law and port topics, and advocating for the update of national maritime-port legislation.

Additionally, ASOTEP maintains relationships with national and international institutions and organizations with similar objectives. Furthermore, ASOTEP defends the rights and interests of its members, contributes to the resolution of disputes in maritime-port matters, and provides consultation and assistance on specialized issues. The association also works towards the development and transformation of Ecuador's port system.
