Michigan Asparagus

Michigan Asparagus represents the growers and producers who cultivate asparagus across Michigan. The Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board works to strengthen the economic position of these producers by supporting research and creating marketing opportunities. Its work includes research and development on production practices and asparagus varieties, alongside campaigns to promote Michigan-grown asparagus.

More than 100 Michigan farm families produce approximately 20 million pounds of asparagus each year for distribution across the United States. The crop’s season typically runs from early May through mid-to-late June. Michigan asparagus is described as buttery, sweet, and earthy, with a mild flavor and a hint of bitterness that pairs well with a range of dishes and cuisines.

The organization also provides resources for consumers and retailers, including recipes, nutrition information, handling guidance, frequently asked questions, and a dietitian toolkit. It highlights asparagus as a low-calorie vegetable with no fat or cholesterol and very little sodium, while offering a wide range of vitamins and nutrients. Its website also shares information for growers, research updates, and supplier contacts.
