The Assault Glider Trust was a volunteer-led project established to create a full-size replica of the Airspeed Horsa assault glider as a memorial to airborne forces. The idea was proposed in 2000 by veterans of the Midland Branch of the Glider Pilot Regimental Association, and volunteers built the replica at RAF Shawbury between 2001 and 2014. In 2019, the completed glider travelled by sea across the English Channel and was displayed in the Netherlands during events marking the 75th anniversary of Operation Market Garden. It is now on permanent display at the War Museum Overloon.
The Trust’s project is complete and the charity has closed. Its website remains as an archive documenting the construction and history of the replica, and as an information resource for historians and people interested in Second World War airborne operations. The archive includes a project timeline, background information, aircraft and artifact material, historical accounts, oral histories, a virtual aircraft tour, videos, plans, and links to related organizations and sponsors.
