APECS, the Association for the Study and Conservation of Elasmobranchs, is a French organization dedicated to sharks and rays. Founded in 1997, it aims to improve knowledge of these marine animals and share that knowledge to support their protection. The association highlights the threats they face, including overfishing, pollution, habitat degradation and climate change, and the vulnerability created by their biological characteristics, such as late reproduction.
APECS carries out research and conservation projects in French coastal waters. Its work includes coordinating a national basking shark observation program, fitting selected basking sharks with satellite tracking tags, and studying species such as the spotted smooth-hound and porbeagle shark. Volunteers also collect biological and biometric data, take samples and mark sharks and rays during scientific surveys conducted with Ifremer. In the Iroise Sea, APECS works with the marine natural park to gather information on local species.
The organization invites the public to report sightings and offers ways to support its work through membership, donations and a shop.
