Association François Giraud

The Association François Giraud is a French organisation dedicated to making cancer information and prevention accessible to Deaf and hard-of-hearing people through French Sign Language (LSF). Inaugurated in September 2015, it continues a cause inspired by François Giraud, a Deaf man whose experience of cancer highlighted barriers to communication and accessible care. The association works to inform, raise awareness and support people affected by cancer, while promoting their right to LSF access during medical appointments, including through interpreters or mediators.

Its activities include creating cancer information in LSF, producing leaflets for hospitals, and organising awareness sessions for hospital staff and conferences with interpreters. It also offers or plans support through discussion groups led by Deaf facilitators, creative and physical workshops, and visits from LSF-speaking volunteers. Information may be shared with a patient’s family according to the patient’s wishes. The association also provides resources about accessibility rights, including the Romain Jacob Charter, and invites the public to support its work through donations and membership.
