Astronomy

Astronomy Cyprus is a prominent organization and the official national member of the International Astronomical Union in Cyprus, dedicated to promoting astronomy and space exploration within the country. As a hub for stargazing enthusiasts, Astronomy Cyprus engages the public through various initiatives and events that celebrate the vastness of the universe.

One of its notable projects is the "Exoworld Naming" initiative, where members of the community can participate in naming exoplanets and stars that have been assigned to Cyprus. The process involves nomination, shortlisting, and public voting, ensuring that names reflect the rich history and culture of the region. Recently, the organization successfully conducted a final voting round where thousands of votes were cast, ultimately revealing the chosen names for the star Alasia and the gas giant exoplanet Onasilos.

Through its efforts, Astronomy Cyprus fosters a deeper appreciation for space science and encourages local participation in global astronomical endeavors.
