About Astropix
Astropix is a brand that offers a new one-stop shopping experience for astronomy enthusiasts. It provides access to the public image galleries of various leading astronomical observatories all in one place. Whether you are interested in astronomical observations, artwork, or charts, Astropix has you covered.
On the Astropix website, you will find thousands of images that have been collected from telescopes worldwide and beyond. New imagery is added every night, and some of the latest additions are featured on the landing page. These images are sourced from a growing list of observatories, each adding their own image inventory with detailed metadata, including titles, captions, astronomical facilities, and coordinates.
The images are presented using the Astronomy Visualization Metadata (AVM) standard, allowing for both general and astronomy-specific information to be embedded directly into the images. Astropix offers a simple and powerful searching feature, providing users with a unified search interface. Users can search by keywords, browse images by category, or build an advanced search using the available metadata.
Once you find the image you want, there is an option to follow a link back to its source for related content. The images on Astropix are displayed in a flexible format that includes subject matter, source names, distances, and color assignments. The site also allows users to view the astronomical images in a WorldWide Telescope browser window to see where they fall in the sky.
Downloading images from Astropix is convenient, as they are available in a variety of standard sizes suitable for different purposes, such as web pages, presentations, tablets, computers, or high-resolution printing. Full-resolution TIF files are also available for the highest quality output. Astropix is the result of an international collaboration led by the International Astronomical Union's Working Group on Communicating Astronomy to the Public.
The goal of the initiative was to improve the discovery and access to graphical assets hidden in observatories' websites worldwide. This led to the development of the Astronomy Visualization Metadata (AVM) standard, which is now used by astronomical science centers worldwide. The AstroPix site is being developed by the IPAC Communications and Education (ICE) team at the California Institute of Technology/IPAC in Pasadena, CA, as part of the NASA Universe of Learning partnership.
Astropix is part of NASA's Universe of Learning project, which aims to engage learners of all ages and backgrounds in exploring the universe. The website is currently in its beta stage, but it already contains a significant library of high-quality images from renowned observatories worldwide and in space. Expect to see consistent updates and expanded content on the site over time.
Experience the wonders of astronomy with Astropix and embark on a journey of discovery and knowledge
