ASZAL

ASZAL, the National Association of Breeders of the Zamorano-Leonese Donkey, brings together breeders, most of whom are based in Zamora, Spain, alongside members from other provinces. Its mission is to conserve, improve and promote this native donkey breed, working with public institutions, universities and partner organizations on breeding, research and conservation initiatives.

The association manages the breed’s genealogical register and provides resources for breeders, including a livestock portal, guidance on animal registration and information about grants and health programs. Its work also supports population monitoring, animal identification, improved reproduction and promotion of the breed. Research and projects have covered semen freezing and artificial insemination, while ASZAL collaborates on developing dairy products made with donkey milk. The association also promotes activities connected with animal-assisted therapy, training for livestock keepers and animal traction. Through events, exhibitions and partnerships, ASZAL helps raise awareness of the Zamorano-Leonese donkey and supports its continued presence. Its website shares news, project information, downloadable forms and details about the breed, its history and traditional working roles.
