Atlantic Karate Club is a non-profit martial arts dojo in Halifax, Nova Scotia, founded in 1969. Recognized as the oldest martial arts dojo in Atlantic Canada, it teaches Ryusei Karate-do and continues a tradition originally established to preserve Chito Ryu Karate-do, created by Sensei Tsuyoshi Chitose. The club is a member dojo of Ryusei Karate-do Canada, led by Sensei Peter Giffen, with Sensei Ken Sakamoto serving as head of the style in Japan.
The dojo welcomes students aged five and older, including beginners and people of varied abilities. Its karate classes offer a way to develop confidence and fitness, learn self-defense, and take on physical and mental challenges. Training is grounded in traditional values of respect, discipline, and perseverance, while emphasizing mutual support and a welcoming community. The club encourages students to progress at their own pace and describes karate as a continuing personal journey. Prospective members can try their first three classes free, with no prior experience required.
