Atua Matua is a Māori environmental knowledge practice that connects ancestral understanding of the natural world with contemporary human wellbeing and activity. Its name reflects two complementary ideas: Atua, Māori environmental knowledge, and Matua, the human expressions of the environment. Developed by Dr.
Ihirangi Heke, the Atua Matua Māori Health Framework was established in 2007 and draws on more than three decades of work building population health and wellbeing programs grounded in traditional knowledge. The framework gathers Indigenous environmental knowledge and adapts it for practical use today, reawakening ancestral ways of thinking across multiple fields. Atua Matua supports work in areas including population health, environmental care, athletic performance, and the development of AI for Humanity.
Its approach is intended for people and organizations seeking to understand relationships between humans and the environment and apply that understanding in everyday life and professional practice. The framework is taught at several universities in New Zealand and internationally, and its applications span community wellbeing, industry, sport, and emerging technology
