About The Auckland Project
The Auckland Project is a regeneration charity with a mission to establish Bishop Auckland as a heritage visitor destination. With the decline of the mining industry, Bishop Auckland has faced economic and social decline, but The Auckland Project aims to change that. Through historic attractions, galleries, nature, food, events, and stays, they bring the rich and surprising story of Bishop Auckland to life for both tourists and local communities.
The Auckland Project's vision is to put people at the heart of everything they do. Working alongside the local community, they strive to create a prosperous town, filled with hope and opportunities for future generations. Visitors can enjoy enriching days out and stays, knowing that their visit contributes to revitalizing this once forgotten town.
The Auckland Project's work is supported by four pillars: helping individuals through skills development and employment, supporting the community to become economically sound through partnerships and a year-round tourist market, protecting the natural environment, and restoring and enhancing the beauty and historic significance of the built environment. By becoming a Prince Bishop Friend, individuals can join a collective effort to make Bishop Auckland an even better place to live, work, and visit. The Auckland Project also offers educational visits and workshops for schools, providing immersive learning experiences across their range of visitor attractions.
Plan a visit to The Auckland Project and be a part of the regeneration of Bishop Auckland. With attractions like Auckland Castle, the Spanish Gallery, the Mining Art Gallery, and the Weardale Railway, there is something for everyone to enjoy while contributing to the brighter future of this once thriving market town
