August Burns Fine Art is the studio and practice of August Burns, an American realist painter based in Middlesex, Vermont. Her work centers on the human figure and portraiture, drawing inspiration from classical Renaissance art and nineteenth-century European figurative painting. Mentored as a teenager by artist Charles Nevad, Burns has continued her development through study with contemporary figurative artists.
Burns creates paintings and drawings from life, seeking to convey the qualities that make each person distinctive. Her process includes speaking with and listening to her subjects, then using marks on paper or canvas to reflect their stories and character. This interest in people also connects with her parallel career in global women’s health, through which she has delivered hundreds of babies and cared for women in Vermont, Bolivia, and Tanzania.
