About Yancoal Australia Ltd
Austar Coal Mine (Austar) is a renowned deep underground coal mine located in the Newcastle coalfields of New South Wales, Australia. With a rich history dating back to 1916, Austar is an aggregate of the former Pelton, Ellalong, Cessnock No 1 (Kalingo), and Bellbird South Collieries. The mine holds a special place in the local community of Cessnock, which has a deep-rooted association with coal mining.
Austar has been a significant player in the coal mining industry, producing both thermal and metallurgical coals. The mining operations, which commenced at Pelton Colliery, expanded over the years, and the Pelton Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) was built in 1960-1961. Underground mining began in 1978, with coal transported to the Pelton CHPP via an overland conveyor.
In 2004, Yancoal acquired the mine, which was then named Austar. After serving the industry and the community faithfully, Austar entered a care and maintenance phase in 2020 and transitioned to closure in 2021. As part of the closure process, Austar is diligently planning and executing the decommissioning and rehabilitation of the site.
