Australian Cemeteries Index is a valuable resource for family history researchers, offering quality images of inscriptions in cemeteries across Australia. The website's primary focus is on providing images of headstones rather than just textual lists, with the ultimate goal of capturing and indexing every headstone and unmarked burial in the country. Founded in 2004 by Reg and Jean McDonell, the site has since grown with the contributions of many volunteers who have been essential to its development.

Led by Rob McDonell, the site continues to be maintained and expanded to provide a wealth of information for users. Visitors can explore various features such as recording inscriptions, contributing to the database, and accessing useful resources. Australian Cemeteries Index is a community-driven initiative dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history found in cemeteries
