MI5, the United Kingdom's domestic intelligence agency, plays a crucial role in safeguarding national security against a backdrop of rising threats. The agency's chief, Ken McCallum, has emphasized the growing risks from international terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State (IS), particularly in the context of its resurgence in Afghanistan. MI5 is actively monitoring domestic threats, as evidenced by recent investigations related to UK citizens attempting to join IS.

In addition to the terror threats posed by IS and al-Qaida, MI5 is challenged by state-backed activities from nations like Iran and Russia. McCallum has reported a notable increase in Iranian plots against dissidents in the UK, as well as state-sponsored sabotage efforts tied to Russian intelligence. With rising pressures and complex threats including assassination attempts, MI5’s vigilant operations have led to the foiling of numerous plots, underscoring the agency's vital role in maintaining UK safety amidst evolving security challenges
