On August 20, 2008, Flight JK5022 Madrid - Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a Spanair MD-82, crashed during takeoff on runway 36L of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. A total of 154 people died and 18 survived with serious injuries. AVJK5022, Asociación de Afectados del Vuelo JK5022, is the only organization created after this tragedy. It was the initiative of a group of relatives who, faced with the lack of adequate response from the authorities, felt that the association was the only way to face the problems arising from the accident. AVJK5022 is registered in the Register of Associations with No. 591440 and was declared a public utility on March 5, 2013. AVJK5022 is recognized by the transport sector. The association focuses on: - Promotion of specific regulations on assistance to victims of civil aviation accidents and their families, both at national and international levels. - Contributing to the improvement of aviation safety by promoting and disseminating initiatives for the implementation of a culture of prevention, in cooperation with all the stakeholders. - To make visible and promote a better understanding of the situation of air accident victims, survivors, and their families. - Promote the creation in Spain of a Multimodal Accident Investigation and Prevention Body, which will extract knowledge from air tragedies to correct the civil aviation system. We believe that the strength of the victims lies in the union of all of us. For this reason, AVJK5022 is leading the International Federation of Air Crash Victims' Families with the aim of uniting all associations of air accident victims or individual victims around the world under one roof. The tragedies are similar and among those affected, there is a lot of experience, knowledge, and work to share.
