Avusturya Cenaze Fonu is a nonprofit mutual-aid association supporting people living in Austria through the practical and financial challenges of a death in the family. Founded in 1982, it has more than 46,000 members and provides assistance around the clock. When a member dies, the fund coordinates the process from beginning to end, including collecting the deceased, completing Austrian legal and administrative paperwork, and arranging religious rites such as washing, shrouding, and funeral prayers. It also organizes safe transportation and burial in Austria or at a destination in the member’s home country, and provides a free flight ticket and travel arrangements for a family member accompanying the deceased.
Membership is based on solidarity among members. After a one-time registration payment determined by age, the annual contribution is €16. The fund states that it covers funeral expenses, which can otherwise range from €5,000 to €7,000. Coverage begins 60 days after the first payment.
