About Awamu
Awamu is a brand with a purpose: to ensure that children in the slums of Kampala, Uganda have access to education and skills that are crucial for their future. They empower caregivers and vulnerable young women by equipping them with practical business skills, enabling them to support their families. In addition, Awamu's community gardens provide essential nutrition.
Their work revolves around supporting children who are HIV positive, as well as their guardians who are often elderly, ill, and impoverished. Awamu understands the importance of children being cared for within their own communities, surrounded by extended families and friends. To achieve this, they help caregivers acquire new skills and the confidence to increase their income, take control of their lives, and support themselves and their families.
The word Awamu means together in L'uganda, the main language spoken in the slum areas where they work. This name reflects the spirit of the women and children they work with. Awamu focuses on three key areas: education, skills and enterprise, and health and nutrition.
They provide vulnerable children with school fees, uniforms, supplies, and books to ensure they receive the education they need to improve their skills and life chances. They also train and empower guardians, young women, and children to learn new skills, start their own businesses, and regain control of their lives. In addition, Awamu's community kitchen gardens break down barriers to learning and improve the health of children.
They have dedicated community volunteers who reach out to orphaned, abandoned, or abused children, helping them know their HIV status, adhere to medication, and never miss a hospital appointment. Awamu was founded based on their relationship with the women they first met in Kampala in 2008. They recognize the transformative impact of investing in women and are guided by the knowledge and understanding of the local community.
By working together with a relentless spirit, Awamu aims to create positive change for families and communities in Kampala
