Banco de Alimentos de Bolivia is the first food bank in Bolivia, founded in 2017 as a result of extensive research that highlighted the need for a food rescue and redistribution system for those in need. In a country where 19. 8% of the population suffers from chronic malnutrition, totaling over 2 million people, it is alarming to discover that at least 1,800 tons of perfectly good food are wasted every day in the metropolitan region of Cochabamba alone.

This wastage occurs across various sectors including agriculture, commerce, and food industries. Motivated by this data, the founding team of Banco de Alimentos de Bolivia studied successful food bank systems in other countries to adapt and implement them in Bolivia. Since its inception, the organization has grown and currently supports over 15,000 people in Cochabamba on a regular basis.

They are also planning to expand their services to La Paz and Santa Cruz. The organization operates through five key departments: Providers, Quality and Safety, Beneficiaries, Research and Monitoring, and Corporate Communications. Their mission is to prevent food waste and eradicate hunger by providing food to vulnerable populations, particularly children.
