About Baba Nyonya Museum
Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum is a house museum in Melaka, Malaysia, offering visitors an introduction to Peranakan family life, history, and culture. Set within a townhouse formed from three terrace lots acquired by the Chan family in 1861, the museum connects its historic setting with the story of a family whose roots in Malacca date to the early 19th century. The family originated in Tong’An County in Fujian, southern China, and has links to one of Malacca’s last Kapitans; its descendants are now in the seventh generation.
The museum also explores the Peranakan community, whose distinctive culture developed as migrants settled in Malaya, adopted local customs, and intermarried with local people. Exhibits and interpretive resources cover the townhouse, the family, Peranakan heritage, and the interwar years from 1918 to 1941. Visitors can purchase tickets, arrange group bookings, or inquire about primary school tours. The museum provides visitor information, directions, downloads, and recommended links to support planning and further learning.
