The Back Saver is a product initiative by Vert Industrial Design Studio that transforms expired construction hard hats into attachable, ergonomic handles. Designed to help minimise postural stress and reduce the risk of injury, the handle offers a practical way to improve how people use tools such as shovels. The project addresses the surplus of hard hats created by frequent replacement in the construction industry, where discarded hats would otherwise often end up in landfill.

Through a circular approach, the material from four hard hats can be used to make five shovel handles, turning a waste stream into a useful resource. Customers can shop for The Back Saver, while construction businesses and others can donate expired hard hats to support production. The brand also provides information about its story and circularity efforts, and invites customers to return handles.

The initiative has received support from Downer, which donated more than 300 hard hats. The Back Saver combines ergonomic product design with reuse, giving discarded safety equipment a new purpose
