About Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail
The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail Foundation supports a network of 18 connected trails spanning more than 28 miles through Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Alabama Gulf State Park. Established in 2003, the trail system showcases the natural diversity of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, crossing seven distinct ecosystems that include coastal pine forests, wetlands, dunes, freshwater marshes, and coastal hardwood swamps.
Visitors can hike, bike, or take a leisurely stroll along well-maintained paths while enjoying scenic landmarks such as the Butterfly Garden and Twin Bridges. The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including migratory birds, butterflies, alligators, otters, bobcats, and white-tailed deer. The foundation provides trail maps, landmark information, visitor guidance, and details on trail rules and local history.
Attractions include primitive campsites, Boulder Park, geocaching, a picnic pavilion, and Al’s Parkour Park and Stage. Welcoming visitors year-round, the trail offers outdoor recreation and opportunities to appreciate the region’s natural beauty. It has been voted Best Recreational Trail by USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards
