Back to the Bush koala rehab

Back to the Bush Koalas, Ltd is a Toowoomba, Queensland organisation working to support the survival and wellbeing of wild koalas. Its central initiative is to establish a full-service, 24-hour koala hospital for Toowoomba and surrounding regions, where sick, injured, or orphaned animals can receive urgent veterinary care, treatment, and rehabilitation. The hospital is planned for an existing building approved by council, which the organisation aims to convert and equip as a veterinary clinic. It is seeking community support and donations to fund the fit-out, medical equipment, ongoing veterinary and nursing staff, and clinical supplies.

The planned facility will include recovery and treatment enclosures designed to provide koalas with a suitable environment during rehabilitation. Back to the Bush Koalas also intends to work with universities and researchers to better understand koala health challenges and support improvements for wild populations, including exploring measures such as chlamydial vaccines. By bringing specialised care closer to the region, the organisation hopes to reduce emergency travel times and improve koalas’ chances of recovery.
