About BACKYARD ULTRA
Backyard Ultra is an information and community resource for fans of the endurance-running format in Germany. A Backyard Ultra consists of repeated 6. 706-kilometre loops, with runners setting off again at the start of every hour.
The challenge is to keep completing the course, testing stamina and determination rather than speed. The site introduces the format, created by Gary Cantrell, also known as Lazarus Lake, and helps runners discover events taking place across Germany, including both listed races and informal gatherings. Its planned and existing resources cover how to organise a Backyard Ultra, race tactics and their advantages and disadvantages, running records, and the number of loops that may be needed to pursue world championship qualification.
The site also shares news and updates about competitions, records, and qualification for individual and team world championships. Runners who cannot find a suitable event, or find that races are full, are encouraged to organise their own, with guidance highlighting the format’s potential for simple, low-effort organisation
