Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 is a NASA-supported, people-powered research project hosted on Zooniverse. It invites volunteers to help search the outer reaches of the solar system for previously unidentified brown dwarfs and planets, including the hypothesized Planet Nine. The project uses images collected by NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission.
Participants examine astronomical images and look for subtle movement that may indicate a dim celestial object, distinguishing potential discoveries from image artifacts and other misleading features. This human review helps researchers investigate data too extensive to search manually. Volunteers can join the project’s classification activities, learn more about its research, view results, and discuss their work with the research team and other participants through Zooniverse Talk.
