Badac, the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative, has been serving the local Aboriginal community since its establishment in 1979. Dedicated to the health, social welfare, and community development of Aboriginal people in the area, Badac has grown steadily over the years and now offers an extensive range of services. Their programs cover various aspects of community well-being, such as Early Childhood Learning & Development, Children & Youth Services, Koorie Youth Justice, Family Support, and Aboriginal-led Family Decision Making.
Badac also provides cultural planning, integrated family services, kinship care, and therapeutic care. They address important health issues, including diabetes, allied health, social and emotional well-being, and alcohol and other drugs. Family violence and local justice initiatives are also part of their focus.
As an Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation (ACCO), Badac serves the Ballarat and district area, encompassing four local government areas. They emphasize prevention and early intervention, putting clients at the center of their approach to ensure active involvement in shaping their own futures. Governed by a Board of Directors elected annually, Badac is committed to empowering their community through inclusive and client-centered practices.
They strive to promote self-determination and have a strategic plan aligned with Social Inclusion principles. Those interested in becoming Badac members can request an application form or download it from their website. Active membership is encouraged, with a 12-month period of engagement with the Co-operative's activities being a requirement.
The Tree Room, available for hire, serves as their main function and community space, symbolizing the roots of their journey and offering a respectful environment for gatherings and discussions. With a commitment to community well-being and a comprehensive range of services, Badac plays a vital role in enhancing the lives of Aboriginal individuals and families in the Ballarat and district area
