Bristol and Avon Family History Society (BAFHS) is a charitable organisation founded in 1975 to promote the study of family history in Bath, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, covering the former county of Avon and its predecessor and successor counties. It welcomes people interested in discovering their family and local histories, with meetings open to all and opportunities for members to take part in the Society’s activities.
BAFHS offers regular in-person and online meetings featuring illustrated talks and lectures, along with research sessions supported by enthusiastic volunteers in its Research Room. The room provides advice and resources for family historians. The Society also publishes a quarterly magazine in digital and print formats, transcribes and publishes historical source material, maintains a dedicated website, and organises outings to places of interest. Its resources include searchable databases, records, maps, books and a journal archive, with materials available through its shop. BAFHS holds events such as family and local history fairs, bringing together community groups, archives and other organisations.
