Bag Factory Studios is a non-profit contemporary visual art organization located in Newtown, Johannesburg. With a rich 32-year history, our mission is to provide a supportive infrastructure for artists and contribute to their long-term development. We are committed to helping artists take a significant step forward in their professional careers.

Our offerings include studio spaces for Johannesburg-based artists, exhibitions showcasing new work by emerging artists, and a prestigious international artist and curator residency program. We also provide artist and curatorial skills development workshops, the annual Young Womxn Studio Bursary, and the renowned David Koloane Award and Cassirer Welz Award. What sets Bag Factory Studios apart is our unique combination of art-making, cultural debate, and art exhibitions, creating a vibrant international environment for experimentation, innovation, and critical dialogue between creatives in South Africa and the rest of the world.

We are proud to be affiliated with the international Triangle Network. Our organization's impact is evident through our celebrated alumni, including David Koloane, Sam Nhlengethwa, Penny Siopis, Tracey Rose, and many more. They have gone on to have international and prize-winning careers, and continue to support our work.
