BaityKool is a multidisciplinary research and development project exploring sustainable housing for very hot climates. Created by a team of more than 100 students and professionals from the United Arab Emirates, France and Palestine, the prototype was built for the inaugural Solar Decathlon Middle East in Dubai in 2018. It earned third place overall, with top awards for sustainability, energy efficiency and building-integrated photovoltaics, alongside recognition for architecture, innovation, engineering and construction, and energy management.
The design brings together climate-responsive architecture and technologies intended to support comfortable, resource-conscious living. A shaded inner courtyard and contemporary mashrabiya-inspired exterior help limit exposure to the sun, while integrated photovoltaic panels generate solar energy. A movable pergola provides additional shade, and an aquaponic system and green living heart support food production. The project also incorporates greywater treatment, a green roof, high-performance walls and radiative sky cooling. Natural ventilation uses the north wind to cool the house at night.
