About Bakwa Books
Bakwa Books is an independent and radical publishing house that specializes in books across generations and genres from around the world. Founded in Yaounde in 2019 as an offshoot of Bakwa Magazine, Bakwa Books is at the forefront of innovation in independent publishing on the African continent. They have become known for their exceptional writing and translations, always delivered in beautifully designed books.
As a publisher, Bakwa Books focuses on literary fiction, creative nonfiction, and translation. They work with major voices across generations and are proud to be the home of talented writers such as Hemley Boum, Nana Nkweti, Mwalimu Johnnie MacViban, and Bate Besong.
Bakwa Books engages and shapes publics and networks of practice through various initiatives, including Bakwa Magazine, BakwaCast, and the Bakwa Reading Series. By prioritizing African audiences and foregrounding translation as a crucial part of their vision, they challenge hierarchies of language and aim to reclaim African stories.
With a small, passionate, creative, and dedicated team, Bakwa Books publishes about four new titles each year, providing authors with a personal touch throughout the publishing process.
Their books are available for purchase internationally through African Books Collective, Amazon, and major retailers. Customers can also buy directly from their website or order internationally by emailing [email protected].
