About Ballhaus Naunynstrasse
Ballhaus Naunynstrasse is a renowned brand in the field of postmigrant theater, with a profound impact on the German theater landscape. As the only Black German theater of its kind, it has pioneered a new artistic practice that advocates for cultural and political inclusion. Founded in 2008 by Shermin Langhoff, this historical venue in the heart of Kreuzberg has transformed from a ballroom to a forced labor camp during the Nazi dictatorship and was on the brink of being demolished during the Cold War.
Now, it serves as a platform for voices of migration and hosts a wide range of performances, including theater, dance, performances, readings, film screenings, and concerts. Under the artistic leadership of Wagner Carvalho, the focus has expanded to include perspectives from the Black, queer, and People of Color communities. With its commitment to continuity and sustainability, Ballhaus Naunynstrasse provides opportunities for emerging artists and promotes cultural education through the academy of autodidacts.
Moreover, it fosters ongoing thematic development through its own productions and international guest performances, as well as interdisciplinary festivals exploring postcolonial perspectives. With its singular mission and diverse programming, Ballhaus Naunynstrasse stands as a unique and indispensable cultural hub in Germany and Europe
