Band Cochon

Band Cochon is a community-led initiative in Réunion dedicated to tracking illegal dumping and pollution. Created in 2011, the site documents reported waste deposits, known locally as “cochonneries,” and shows their locations and whether they have been cleaned. Its listings cover municipalities across the island and include photographs, dates, addresses, and community comments, helping visitors follow reported cases and local cleanup activity.

The project relies on volunteer “hunters” who photograph and report dumping, with the stated aim of encouraging public awareness and action against pollution. People can submit reports for free, anonymously, and quickly through the website, and a mobile app lets users take and share photos directly. Band Cochon also publishes regular reports summarizing affected municipalities and the number of deposits tracked, alongside news, videos, posters, and information about waste-disposal facilities. Its community wall and Band Cochonbook social network provide spaces for members to discuss environmental issues and share updates.
