Samenwerking Bandkeramiek Zuid-Limburg brings the story of the Bandkeramiekers, the first farmers in the Netherlands, to life. More than 7,000 years ago, these communities settled in South Limburg and introduced a new way of living. Their traces remain beneath the ground and across the region, where archaeological sites, museums, monuments and reconstructed settlements help reveal their history.
The collaboration works to make Bandkeramian heritage visible, accessible and engaging through research, education, cultural projects and public experiences. Its website guides visitors through the history of the first farmers, archaeological discoveries and the ways experts investigate the past. Visitors can also explore locations, routes, information points and events throughout South Limburg.
Learning resources include workshops, educational programmes, background publications and other opportunities to deepen understanding. Projects include a design competition for a Bandkeramian landmark along the A2, a public book, regional murals and digital access to heritage information. Developed with several South Limburg municipalities, the initiative connects local partners and audiences with a shared prehistoric past, inviting people to discover and experience the Bandkeramian world.
